IMPACT

DuAnyam+womens+artisan+weaving+co-operative.jpg

Established in 2014, Du’Anyam started its first project in Larantuka City, East Nusa Tenggara, one of the poorest provinces in Indonesia with one of the highest maternal and newborn mortality rates in Indonesia.

Staggering upsetting statistics - 1 in every 3 Indonesian children suffering from malnutrition; 260 babies dying before reaching the age of 1 month old each day; and 42 women dying from childbirth, everyday.

By regenerating existing wicker weaving traditions an alternative income source to subsistence farming for pregnant women the maternal & newborn health issue is addressed in a sustainable manner. We aim to promote the unique wicker-crafting culture of these artistically-gifted women to the people of Australia. By partnering with Du’Anyam we want to be a part of empowering these women by helping them gain control over their family’s income, resulting in a positive change to escape poverty.

Research has shown that when women are given more financial autonomy, they are more likely to focus spending on nutritious food, health care, and education.
Through everyone’s hard work, Du’Anyam has managed to increase the women’s income to 40%, improving their welfare.
