Alpaca Silver is a metal alloy of copper, nickel and sometimes zinc or iron. As a material, Alpaca silver is considerably less expensive than sterling silver, but gives the beautiful silver appearance. It does not contain any Alpaca (the animal!).
Alpaca metal and Peruvian turquoise are combined in these scrollwork earrings from Manos Amigas, creating employment opportunities for makers living in and around Lima.

IMPACT
Intercrafts Peru is a nonprofit and democratic cooperative founded in 1992 by and for Peruvian artisan groups to help improve their living and working conditions. It also provides more sustainable livelihoods by reaching beyond limited local markets to global fair trade markets.
Intercrafts Peru artisans have full participation in organisational decisions. Important decisions are made democratically, with operations and planning overseen by a Board of Directors elected from member organisations. Currently, Intercrafts Peru represents 10 partner organisations with more than 100 artisans throughout the country.
The group’s aim is to keep overhead costs low, to share responsibility so more income remains in the hands of the artisans, and to explore new markets. The association's headquarters are located in Lima with other offices situated in the marginal districts and communities of Lima, Ayacucho, Huancayo, Cuzco, Puno, Arequipa and Piura. Benefits to members include health care, loan funds and advances, school supplies and books, training programs and technical assistance.
